Back in 1950s,the National Cash Register company(NCR) has develop a kind of paper that can create copy without carbon and it’s widely used in office affairs of forms,invoices,bills,labels and printing paper.So this kind of paper is named after the company name as NCR carbonless paper.The company exclusively used microcapsule in NCR carbonless paper and achieved industrial production.Since then,the microcapsule and NCR carbonless paper has both been in blooming progress.

Carbonless paper usually has 3 copies including CB,CFB,CF side which have different chemicals.Microcapsule is used in CB and CFB paper that the wall material broken by pressure and the leuco dye inside come out to react with the color developer resin.

Microcapsule technology for NCR carbonless paper is one of the earliest and most typical application in industrial production.The principle is that the wall material enfold the leuco dye(CVL,ODB-2) solution and emulsify disperse in water as small particle size(2-8μm,5-6μm≥80%).It’s the most vital chemical in NCR paper coating that determines the quality of the paper and has more than half dry weight in coatings.

Microcapsule mainly consists of leuco dye,wall material and emulsifier.The most widely used dye is CVL for blue image and ODB-2 for black image.Wall materials varies according to the reaction type.Polyurethane has best mechanical property but the isocyanate monomers is toxic and hard to recycle;Urea-formaldehyde has best dispersing but the wall has collapsed risk and hard to control;The MF(melamine-formaldehyde resin) is the most popular choice because of its low cost and easy to recycle the byproducts.The emulsifier is used to dispersing the wall material under high shear emulsification.Usage and emulsifier type can influence the particle size of the microcapsule.If the particle size under 2μm,the microcapsule will be harder to break and then affect the color developing reaction.If the particle size over 10μm,the microcapsule will early rupture and contaminate the paper.The SMA resin is usually used as the emulsifier of microcapsule and it can disperse the microcapsule in proper particle size and have uniform particle size distribution.
